Pink Flamingo Lawn Ornaments

In the United States if anyone speaks about lawn ornaments pink flamingos would come to mind for many. This is generally due to the well known and established Don Featherstone who designed the plastic pink flamingo in 1957.  Since then Don Featherstone’s creation has become an American Icon, the plastic pink flamingo lawn ornament.   In 1972 after the release of John Water’s movie Pink Flamingos the plastic flamingos created by Don Featherstone became a stereotypical example of lawn kitsch.  Don Featherstone won the lg Nobel prize for Art in October 1996.

Many companies have imitated their own versions of pink flamingos in different shapes, colours and sizes.  Imitation products can now be seen on lawn fronts and store shelves.   However the official pink flamingos made by Union Products (the original manufacturer) from 1987 onwards have the signature of Don Featherstone located on the rear underside of the flamingo.  The official flamingos are sold are sold in pairs with one flamingo standing and the other with its head lower to the ground.

Union Products closed of Leominster, Massachusetts ceased production of pink flamingos in November 2006.  However, HMC International LLC, a subsidiary of Faster-Form Corporation, purchased the copyright and plastic molds of Featherstone’s original plastic flamingos in 2007, and will be resuming production of them in Westmoreland, New York.
